Without wading into the deep waters of just war philosophy/theology, let this war supporter go on record with at least two cheers for this post. I too read Novak's claim about Iraqi deaths under Saddam and I wondered both who the scholars are he carelessly references and whether or not the pre-Saddam death figure he presents was accurate (of course, even if it was accurate, Daniel does a great back of the envelope analysis explaining why things would still be worse for the average Iraqi post-Saddam). I don't think it does us war supporters any favors when folks like Novak are careless with the facts, and I'm glad you called him out on it. Novak should be especially careful with his facts, given that he likes to call out others who are sloppy with their fact checking:

Also, this post has another example of why I keep coming back for more of your prose:

"Novak is, of course, attacking Pope Benedict for saying, “Nothing positive comes out of Iraq.” Because so many “positive things” come from Iraq. This is partly true, if you count Christian and other Iraqi refugees as ”positive things.”

Your biting wit reminds me of Samuel Johnson (I just picked up Boswell's "Life" so I have Johnson on the brain). Keep it up.

Thanks for pointing this out. I don't have an FT subscription, so I haven't read it and I can't access it online. Perhaps I will take a look at a library copy, if I have some spare time to read it. I assume it will mostly be recycled arguments from his previous articles on the subject, but I will see if there is anything worth remarking on.

Speaking of awful articles by George Weigel, have you read his latest article, Just Wars and Iraq Wars? I have been kind of hoping you would tear into it one of these days.
