The first target of the new Russian lebensraum are going to be the quasi-independent republics or independent states in eastern or central Europe. Of course, the vast majority of the people there who are not Russian violently hate Russia, and no amount of natural gas can paper over that. If Putin (and the siloviki and Russians in general) insist on regarding Russia as a Great Power _in a pre-American way_, there is going to be world of hurt for all parties. That’s all true, but for the sake of the United States and civilization as a whole this project either has to be redefined or defeated.
