That collapse, we say here in Phillies country, was a weird sort of karma. The Phillies collapsed in 1964, and while the Mets had nothing to do with that debacle, their arrogance this season, and their derisive attitudes toward us, particularly after Rollins uttered his oracle, made the baseball gods wroth. And they did smite the Mets, to great rejoicing in Philly.

Oh, I don't know. The Cubs collapse time and again, and loathing them never gets old. But the Mets might be a special case, given the truly awesome speed with which they collapsed.

All I can say is, politicking is soul destroying.

But also, as a Phillies phan I think I'll find it difficult to hate the Mets post-collapse. It'd be like hating the sick.

That's possible, but I think we should approach it as a legitimist would approach a usurper dynasty: just the throne is empty, because no legitimate king sits on it, the championship series isn't really a championship series.

There would have to be other qualifications made before we could allow people to start supporting the Mets. Fans of other Eastern Division teams would be justified in simply ignoring it all together, and Houston fans are really not permitted to support the Mets in a World Series since they stopped Houston from going to one in 1986.

I think that a minor codicil is required for that New York Exception: in the horrifying event of a subway series, it is permissible for National League fans, even fans of the Philadelphia Phillies, to support the Mets, since the Yankees are, well, the Yankees, the Evil Empire of sports (although the Patriots are angling for this status as well).
